Marist at Siena '06
For all the Marist alums who enjoyed the Kennedy, Tullis, and Smith days of Marist basketball.. you should really check out this year's team. They are a lot of fun to watch... and they have Jared Jordan... perhaps the best player the MAAC has seen in the past few years. He's an incredible point guard... he lead's the team in points, rebounds, and assists. He led the nation in assists last year and is doing so again this year. Looks like he's on the scout's radar for the NBA draft this year.
Both the men's and the women's teams are very formidable. Currently, both are favored to win their league's and make the NCAA's. You never know with all the upsets that happen in the MAAC tournament, but this year sure has been a lot of fun. I went up to Albany for a game against Siena... and boy was it worth it. An OT thriller with Marist coming out on top. Check out the pic from the Poughkeepsie Journal of the KKPSI/band contingent (I'm top left, looking away) that made the trip up.

Update - sports obsessed
Judging by the frequency of my entries, apparently blog writing isn't really my thing. I just seem to have very little interest in using my computer once I get home from work. Eight hours at the computer is plenty. Instead, I've been keeping busy playing soccer, tennis, and ultimate frisbee. I've also been following a variety of sporting events. It is a fantastic time to be a sports fan. In particular, I've been obsessed with the World Cup. I've also been following the Sox and dabbling in other events (NBA finals, Wimbledon, etc). I've been playing soccer for fun a couple of days a week for a few years now, but I haven't gotten into the professional soccer scene until a month or two before the cup. I didn't realize what I was missing. I've been learning not only learning the international side, but also learning about how domestic leagues work ( English Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, MLS ). I'm particularly fascinated by the club promotion and demotion system. In American sports, all the top level teams are guaranteed to stay in the "major leagues". In international soccer leagues, if you come in at the bottom of your league's standings, you are punished by a demotion into a lower league. If you finish at the top of your league, you are rewarded with a promotion into a better league. I like it. If this existed in MLB for example, teams like Kansas City would have more incentive to not suck. So far so good with the Red Sox so far this season. They are a couple of games up on the Yankees and are in position for a playoff run. We've been totally owning the NL East this year in interleague play. This week (Tuesday - Thursday) we're playing the Mets, who are having a great season of their own. To top that off, the pitching matchups couldn't be more intriguing : Tuesday : Jon Lester vs Alay Soler (the promising rooks) Wednesday : Josh Beckett vs Pedro Martinez (the new ace vs the old and the return of the great one to Boston) Thursday : Curt Schilling vs Tom Glavine (the veterans with Hall of Fame resumes) On Tuesday, we took game one. Go Sox! In sadder news, everyone's favorite baseball beat writer, Peter Gammons, is in the hospital following surgury for a brain anurysm. Get better Peter! I'm really looking forward to his weekend. I'll be at the beach in CT for BK and Maryann's wedding. We'll be camping the whole weekend so I'm really hoping for nice weather. I'm taking Friday off and the office is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Wooohoo! :-) I wish I couple make it to Maine this year for the shindig at Matt's parents as well. Have a great time everyone! | | Monday, June 12th, 2006 | | 3:31 pm |
Finally moved!
I've been busy of late trying to complete my move from Hyde Park to Poughkeepsie. It seems you don't realize just how much crap you own until you have to move it. After a few complications, (a couple of messy, smashed fingers from moving the housemates big tv) the move is just about complete. I now live on Adriance Ave in Poughkeepsie, just off Hooker. The new place is definitely an upgrade over Ledgewood. It went down as one very, very expensive month, though because we paid rent at both locations for the month of June. I also finally gave in and registered my car in New York. Several hundred dollars and a ton of paperwork later, it's all about done. New York certainly does make it complicated. In other news, we spottted a big black bear in my backyard (Hyde Park). It seems he also knocked over our trash can. I don't know if it is the same bear, but one's been spotted all over Dutchess County in the past few weeks (including near Gartland at Marist). | | Tuesday, April 11th, 2006 | | 1:34 pm |
Thieves suck!!!
The title says it all, but we had our house broken into on Friday. I left at like 9:30 in the morning on Friday and didn't get back until around 3 am. My housemates were out of town. When I got home, I went in the house and went into my room. I noticed that my drawers were dumped and many of the electronics were pulled out. I quickly left the house and called the cops. It turns out they took a pretty solid haul of stuff from us: 1 XBox360 ($400) 2 XBox360 wireless controllers ($50/each) 7 XBox360 games ($60/each) 1 Xbox 3 Xbox controllers 15 Xbox games 1 Gamecube 3 Gamecube controllers 10 Gamecube games 1 PlayStation 2 2 PS2 controllers 10 PS2 games Probably 40 DVD movies Family Guy Seasons 1-2 24 Season 1 Scrubs Season 1 1 laptop computer 1 wireless router Probably over 200 music cd's (mostly original's) from 2 cd binders Roughly $250 in quarters 2 suitcases ...... I called a bunch of people to ask if they noticed when I signed off Instant Messanger because I got disconnected from my pcc when they stole the router. It looks like around 6 pm. I talked to all the direct neigbors, but they didn't catch anything. Luckily, my college roommate who lives down the street saw a dude walking through his backyard with my housemate Joe's suitcases around 6 pm on Friday. We've got a solid case, but I don't think I should write too much as it's still under investigation. Either way, this is the suck! Even if we catch the guy, it's probably too late to recover the majority of the stuff. | | Thursday, February 2nd, 2006 | | 12:19 am |
Band 20th Anniversary Weekend
I've decided to give this blogging thing another try, but who knows how long it will last. I seem to have a short attention span for these things. Actually, I'm usually just not up for using my computer much after I get home from work (since I use one all day). I've managed to keep pretty busy recently. Classes started back up at Marist a couple of weeks ago, but I'm only taking one this time around. The class I'm taking is called Web Services. For those not in the know, that means I get to play with and throw around all kinds of buzz words and funny sounding technologies (XML, SOAP, WSDL, UDDI, Service-Oriented Architectures, Grid Services, WSRF, etc). We've got our first quiz tommorrow, but I'm not too worried about it because I am pretty familiar with the material we've covered in the class so far (XML Schemas, XML Namespaces, general Web Services concepts). The past few days have been pretty fun. On Friday we did our usual soccer routine. I think we played for slightly over 3 hours. I felt a bit rusty as I didn't play the week before because I was in Massachusetts or the whole month before that while Marist wasn't in session (we play in McCann). Afterwards, we picked up some doof and headed back to Ledgewood (my place) to chill with some friends. TJ had some of his friends over as well, so we had a full house. On Saturday, a bunch of the old college band alumni and friends came back to Potown. Chris, Rachel, Janet, Christy, Charlie, Pam, Jess, and I all went to Everready for old times sake. Afterwards, there was a reception in the MD for the alumni (and the bands 20th anniversary). I then dusted off the trombone to play at the Marist vs. Siena basketball game. McCann was in rare form - it sold out and they were turning people away 40 minutes before game time. Rahul, Alissa, Kyle, and Stacy didn't make it in. Besides Siena being our biggest rival, there were a couple of other factors why it was so crowded. Marist is having a pretty good season and Siena is also playing surprisingly well. It was also basketball alumni game, so Rick Smits was in town and they raised a banner for all of Marist's 1000 point scorers over the years. Marist seemed to control the game from the outset, although it got unneccesarily close near the end. This team always seems to make things interesting. After the game, Jared, Will, and I went to Mahoney's, where we met up with Meghan for a short while, before heading over to Darby's. I'm starting to feel a bit old at that bar. I think I was just about the oldest one there, except for Jared (thanks bud :-)). Sunday was a pretty chill day. Jared and Will camped out at my place Saturday night and when we got up we met up with Dan Shelah and the Palace (yes, the Palace... haven't been there in some time). Later that evening, I went to see 'Memoirs of a Geisha' with Rahul and Alydod. It was ok, but I wouldn't really recommend it. Overall, it was a pretty fun weekend. It was really nice to see the old band/A1 friends, although a bunch were still missed. It's been far to long since I've seen everyone! |
